Public Wi-Fi VPN —

Public Wi-Fi networks — coffee shops, airports, hotels, libraries — are generally unencrypted and shared with strangers. Attackers can set up fake hotspots with names like 'Airport Free WiFi', or use packet sniffers to capture unencrypted traffic. While HTTPS protects most web traffic, DNS queries, app traffic, and older protocols can still leak. A VPN encrypts everything at the device level.

A VPN significantly reduces your exposure. It encrypts all traffic from your device before it reaches the network, so even if someone is intercepting packets on the same Wi-Fi, they see only encrypted data — not your passwords, banking sessions, or messages.

LimeVPN uses WireGuard by default, which is designed for minimal overhead. On most public Wi-Fi connections, the speed difference is negligible — often less than 5-10% on fast connections. On slow hotel Wi-Fi, the encryption overhead is barely noticeable because the bottleneck is the network itself.

Mobile data (4G/5G) is encrypted by your carrier, so it's more secure than public Wi-Fi. However, a VPN still protects your privacy from your carrier, prevents ISP tracking, and is recommended when you want privacy from all parties — not just other network users.

A DNS leak occurs when your DNS queries — the lookups that translate domain names to IP addresses — bypass the VPN tunnel and go directly to your ISP or another DNS server. This reveals every website you visit even if your main traffic is encrypted. LimeVPN routes all DNS queries through its own encrypted resolvers inside the tunnel, preventing leaks.
