A VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It is an encrypted passage between two devices that gives you access to any website or any online service. Through a VPN service you can change your IP address to any of 148 VPN location server which you can choose when you connect.
You probably must have heard about a VPN before, it’s even possible you have used one before but do you know what it does. It stands for Virtual Private Network which basically means it gives you privacy online. Originally VPN were only used in business settings where big businesses, organization or governments wanted to secure data. Since people work remotely and needed to connect online, business need to create a secure connection otherwise they were at risk of hacking or other loss of data. Now a days VPN are used by everyone, specifically because it ensures your location stays private. Your data is encrypted and you can surf the web anonymously but how does it work?
When you visit a site like facebook or twitter, you type in a domain name that name is basically a nick name for the website IP address and an IP address is just like your home address only it consists of numbers and not street names. Since it’s much easier to remember names than a string of numbers, we give websites domain names and a server translates them. Your computer as an IP address too, so does every device browsing the internet. When you type in a website domain name on your browser whether you are using chrome, fire fox or even internet explorer you send your data to the internet until it reaches a server, then translates the data and sends you back the website you requested.
The problem is when you send that data to the server you are sending them your IP address and a lot of other information too, this is where hackers can intersect your information. Imagine you’re sitting in a coffee shop using a public Wi-Fi on your phone and you want to check your bank account, someone else with a laptop can log into the network and get hold of your passwords, emails and other information you might have but if you use a VPN they wouldn’t be able to access that.
A VPN can change your location, a lot of video streaming websites like Netflix and Hulu have strict content depending on your geo location. Let’s say you want to watch your favourite show on Netflix and it’s not available in your country. You send your information to one of the VPN servers in America and the next server sends it to the Netflix website, Netflix now thinks you are In America and you can stream your shows without any problem. A VPN tricks them into thinking you from a different location because the signal is coming from another server.
In the case of you travelling to a country where Facebook isn’t allowed, you really don’t need to worry about deleting your social network.
Instead use a VPN to sign into your Facebook account and then you can always stay connected with your loved ones since your Web traffic is anonymised when you use VPN, you can be communicating with your friends privately and securely.
